Unbelievable really.Unfortunately for us, there is no equivalent hardware out there. Additionally, after the initial setup support from Sling, they charge you just to talk to a human in support.
After several months of relatively carefree use, I did a software/firmware update recommended by Sling. My first impression of the Slingbox was "hey, this thing is great." It was relatively easy to set up and worked reasonably well, though it did not really support HD on the Macintosh platform.
Despite the "firmware upgrade issue" being all over the internet billboards, Sling will not acknowledge the issue. Since then, my Slingbox has been essentially useless.
The streaming speeds are now so slow, that the video and sound quality are not watchable. The biggest disappointment, however, comes in the form of lack of support. Those who have tried this have found that since Sling doesn't acknowledge the problem, they can not help the caller and suggest that the hardware is defective.and the suggestion from them is to BUY a new Slingbox.
Buyer beware.do not expect any support from this company if you choose to buy their equipment.
I had heard about a Slingbox and got this one when we returned. Setup was easy enough. We finally were able to find that we could watch Southpark reruns off their website, which was great, but we wanted a little more variety the next time we traveled. I was in Italy a couple of months ago and found that I was very limited in being able to watch TV over my laptop. Slingbox is developing software to use it on Android phones. I am waiting for my new Roku box Roku HD Player (my first one quit on me) to see if that will work OK, but I suspect it will.
The Slingbox operates the digital cable box/DVR fine with the AV system and TV off.
I haven't traveled with it yet, so I don't know how it will do under differing situations, but from other reviews it looks like it will be fine. From computers on my home network the Slingbox picture looks great.
True it does not have any HDMI connections, but the composite connections worked fine.
Netflix streaming and most everything else said that broadcasts outside the US were not allowed.
You may have to struggle some with your home network, but they give good step-by-step instructions on getting it to connect.
It works flawlessly and you are able to lower the resolution of the picture so that it shows well at your transmission speed.
Cable internet going through 802.11g wireless works fine.I was a little concerned that I would need to have the AV (surround-sound) system and/or TV on as my devices are connected to them by HDMI cables, which transmit information both ways and devices sometimes will not operate with HDMI-connected output devices off.
The software needed by the computers to watch the signal downloaded and installed fine for both Windows XP and Vista computers. You do not need a Sling catcher if you are only going to watch TV through a laptop or cell phone.
It already will work with iPhones. The Slingbox really works amazingly well and if you want to watch video from the sources you have in your home anywhere you happen to be, it is a great device.
This is an amazing device which lets you watch your favorite sports while traveling. It is dependent on having a good Internet connection while on the road. At home you know the connection is good but on the road it is not always the best. It sure beats trying to follow a game on a chat.
He always wants me to watch his shows on his I-Phone. I ordered this for a friend so that his wife did not know he bought it. Anyway he LOVES the thing and cannot stop talking about. Hope this reviews helps. I cannot provide more specific information, sorry.
The reason I spent extra cash to buy this model. My router is in another room upstairs, so I purchase the Turbo Link that plugs into your electrical outlet. However, I bought this model as it was advertised to have a second tuner that allows me to watch one channel while at work, while my wife watches something else at home. Slingbox reconnected without issue and set up was easy to the other, different model, cable box. However, I now no longer can control the DVR or watch HD channels remotely. I have Verizon Fios at home and Verizon DSL at work. Picture and sound quality is great, even when I connect at work throughthe internet.
My laptop WiFi conects to my DSL router and picture feed speed is fine. I could cotrol my DVR and watch any channel. Was easy to set up when I read the directions. Had to call Slingbox customer support (who was quick and helpful) to find this out. My only solution was to hook up the SlingBox to the rarely used cable box in our bedroom. Now I can watch all the channels while wife watches something else downstairs. No extra monthly fees apart from the Verizon Data plan I already had for my laptop. When I turn in WiFi on the IPhone then connect to my Verizon Wireless "MiFi" personal router, I'm able to watch all my TV channels anywere there is a Verizon signal.
Connection was flawless. For the $100 difference in price I'll just keep this model as I'm too lazy to tear it all apart, ship back to Amazon and get a different model. That is correct, but only applies if I watch the basic cable broadcast channels. None of the cable channels (CNBC, FOX News, etc,) can be watched seperately at the same time. I also have an IPhone and downloaded the Slingmedia application from the ITunes store ($30). Cool product, just make the dual tuner a "real" dual tuner.
